Our Approach to Tracking

Why Moruppi has a Mindful Mode
A note from the solo dev behind Moruppi

A few weeks ago, I was reading a post on Reddit from someone in r/intuitiveeating. They described a feeling I'd heard โ€” and felt โ€” dozens of times before:

"I've caught myself restricting what I eat when I'm displeased with my calorie count for the day, rather than listening to my hunger and eating intuitively."

Underneath that post, 20+ comments. Each one echoing the same ache: the numbers meant to help were being weaponized against the person looking at them.

This is why Moruppi has three display modes.

The Problem With Calorie Trackers

Most food trackers are built on an assumption: that users want to see every calorie, every macro, every percentage, in real time.

For many people, this works. They set a goal, hit the number, feel accomplished. The app does what it says on the tin.

But for a lot of other people โ€” maybe you โ€” the running total becomes a problem. You open the app at 2pm, see "1,100 calories remaining," and the rest of your afternoon narrows into mathematical calculation. Not "am I hungry?" but "can I afford it?"

For people in eating disorder recovery, this can be worse than unhelpful. It can be a direct trigger. The same tool meant to support wellness ends up reinforcing the exact patterns someone is trying to escape.

The traditional answer has been: "just don't track."

But some people want to track. Diabetic users need to balance macros. Post-surgery recovery patients need to hit specific protein targets. Athletes need to fuel. People building new habits like seeing their patterns over time.

The problem isn't tracking. The problem is tracking's defaults.

Three Modes For Three Realities

Moruppi offers you a choice about how your food information is shown. The data is identical in every mode โ€” only what you see changes.

๐Ÿซ Full Numbers (default)

This is the standard experience. You see calories, macros, percentages, and progress bars in real time. If this works for you, nothing changes.

Who it's for: Users comfortable with real-time number feedback. Fitness-focused goals, muscle gain, methodical trackers.

๐ŸŒฟ Mindful Mode

Log your food like normal. The data saves. But Moruppi hides today's running totals, macros, and percentages. Yesterday's data and everything older remains fully visible.

The character responds to patterns โ€” "you logged three meals today" โ€” rather than numbers.

Who it's for: People in ED recovery. Users practicing intuitive eating. Anyone who's noticed that watching the numbers tick up during the day changes how they eat.

๐Ÿฉบ Medical Mode

Numbers are visible, but reframed. No "over goal" language. No red warning colors. No "deficit" or "surplus" framing. Just: targets and progress toward them.

Who it's for: Diabetic users balancing macros. Post-surgery recovery requiring specific protein intake. Medical nutrition therapy patients who need accuracy without diet-culture pressure.

What Stays The Same In Every Mode

Your food log data is identical regardless of mode. You can switch anytime. Historical data is always visible โ€” the only thing that changes is how today's running totals are shown.

The character still responds to how you eat. Streaks still count (unless you turn them off in Mindful Mode). Recipes still unlock. Quests still happen.

Moruppi doesn't change who it is in different modes. It just changes what it shows you.

A "Peek" If You Need It

In Mindful Mode, there's a small "Peek at today" button on the Nutrition page. Tap it and today's numbers reveal for 30 seconds before hiding again.

This is intentional friction. Sometimes you genuinely need to see today's data โ€” meal planning for the evening, deciding whether to have a protein shake, a medical reason. The peek lets you access the information consciously, without turning it into a habit.

If you find yourself peeking every ten minutes, that's data too. Maybe Mindful Mode isn't right for you right now. That's okay.

Where To Find It

Open Moruppi โ†’ Me (profile) tab โ†’ Display Mode.

You can change your mode anytime. We also mention the modes briefly during onboarding, so new users know they have choices from the start.

Why This Matters To Me

Moruppi is my first app. I built it over two years because every tracker I tried made me feel guilty, measured, or wrong. I wanted something kind.

But "kind" means different things to different people. For some, kindness is a cute character and encouragement. For others, kindness is giving them the ability to not see numbers that hurt them.

A single default can't be kind to everyone.

So Moruppi offers you a choice. Three choices, actually. Because your relationship with food is yours. And your relationship with numbers about food is also yours.

Thank You

The person who wrote that Reddit post may never read this. But their post is the reason Mindful Mode exists.

If this feature helps you โ€” or someone you know โ€” I'd love to hear about it. Email me at hi@moruppi.app. I read every message.

If something isn't working, I want to hear that too. Mindful Mode and Medical Mode are new. We'll iterate.

Thank you for trusting Moruppi with something as personal as how you eat. We don't take that lightly.
